On February 12 2016 in the Council Room of RFI, the first Workshop on the ERSAT EAV project took place, financed by the European Agency “European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency” (GSA). The project is coordinated by Ansaldo STS, with the participation of prestigious European companies operating in the railway and aerospace sector including RFI, Trenitalia, DB Netz (German railway), Center of German Aerospace Research (DLR) and ASSTRA representing the Italian Local Public Transport and the Bocconi University.

ERSAT EAV, based on the use of satellite technology to make the management of the train’s movement more efficient, represents the first example in Europe of the integration of satellite technology (GALILEO in particular) and railway technology (ERTMS). The heart of the ERSAT EAV system is in Sardinia, Italy where Ansaldo STS has realized with the help of RFI and Trenitalia, the Experimentation Centre on the Cagliari San Gavino railway line. This Center, first of its kind and made possible also with the support of the Italian and European Space Agency, will allow the integration of the satellite technology in the ERTMS signaling system of which Italy is the European leader.

Stefano Siragusa, CEO and General Manager of Ansaldo STS, Maurizio Gentile, CEO of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Italian FS Group), Carlo Des Dorides, Executive Director of the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA), Joseph Doppelbauer, Executive Director of the European Railway Agency (ERA) and Amedeo Gargiulo, Director of the Agenzia Nazionale per la Sicurezza delle Ferrovie (ANSF) took part in the event.
