The Finmeccanica Company holds the concession from the Genoa local authority to design and build the infrastructure
Ansaldo STS, a Finmeccanica Company that is contracted by the Genoa local authority as concession holder to design and build the Genoa metro, will be a key player in the inaugural celebrations for the extension of this major piece of infrastructure. The extension runs from the city centre for a distance of 1.6km, and was partly constructed through new excavations (1km) and partly through the re-use of the existing Grazie tunnels (250m).
As concession holder, Ansaldo STS, the world leader in integrated transport systems and rail and metro signalling, is responsible for the civilian works (including tunnels, shafts, surface works and finishing) and technological works (including signalling installations, telecommunications, energy supply, elevators, escalators, fire safety systems, ventilation and air conditioning).
The new metro line extends to Brignole station, crossing the Bisagno watercourse and going along a stretch of track that is currently being considered for a future extension to Martinez-Terralba-S.Martino and/or the Marassi stadium, which would have no environmental impact.
The most innovative aspect of the extension is the interchange platform between the railway and the metro. This creates an overall synergy between the two transport systems, benefiting passengers, who can take advantage of the substantial improvement in the connections between the centre, the western area and the rest of the city, and enhances the urban integration of Borgo Incrociati.
The technological innovations provided by Ansaldo STS include the new computerised signalling management system (ACC, Ansaldo’s computer-based interlocking system), which is highly flexible, modular and configurable, making it easy to adapt for future extensions.
Sergio Luca, CEO of Ansaldo STS, said: “The works inaugurated today represent a specific innovation model for urban transport in a city with a layout like Genoa's. With this modern metro, the city will see significant benefits, in terms of both mobility and the environment."
