Few weeks after the inauguration of Ankara metro M3 line, the M2 line entered in revenue services in presence of the Turkish Prime Minister (Recep Tayyip Erdogan).

The M2 line, which runs 16.5 km and serves 12 stations, is part of the project for the modernization of the Ankara Metro network. The overall project has been awarded to the consortium led by Ansaldo STS and including Alsim Tesisleri Alarko Sanayi Ve Ticaret AS.

Within the framework of the contract, Ansaldo STS’ scope of work covers the design, supply, installation, test and commissioning of the new signalling systems and subsystems, CBTC (Communications Based Train Control), IXL Interlocking, ATS (Automatic Train Control), DCS (Data Communication Systems) to equip the new lines M2, M3 and M4 and respective new fleet of trains, as well as updating the existing signalling systems on the M1 line, depot and trains.

The Ansaldo STS technological solutions allow safe and reliable operations up to 80 km/h as well the interoperability on the entire Ankara metro network. Full functionalities of CBTC system will be operational progressively till the overall project is completed within 2015.

These significant milestones achieved by the Ankara metro project come soon after a series of successful commissioning of Ansaldo STS’ solutions based on CBTC technology, on metro networks in China (Zhengzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang, Xian, and Hangzhou).

Thanks to its proven range of signalling solutions, Ansaldo STS is an undisputed partner of rail operators and train builders around the world, with no limitations on network’s size and complexity. Its main on-going projects, within urban transit activity, include the new Copenhagen city-ring (Denmark), the Stockholm red line (Sweden), the Riyadh metro line 3 (Saudi Arabia), and the Taipei circular line (Taiwan), all of them involve the combination of driverless mode of operations with CBTC signalling technology.

The “CBTC” (Communications-Based Train Control) traffic management system has been developed to increase performance and efficiency of the underground railway systems of major cities. Unlike other radio-based traffic management systems for railway applications, (ERTMS Level 2 and 3), CBTC technology is not a standard and every provider has developed its own technology.
